METALTERJ #1520
Industrial Liquid Detergent & Rust Preventive
For simultaneous cleaning AND assured rust prevention. Prevents in-wash rust, prevents after-wash rust for over 30 days if not rinsed in plain water. Use at any temperature; has near-zero, unstable foam at any temperature. As most detergents, it removes most substances faster at higher temperatures.
Use on all ferrous metals, glass, most plastics, and other materials not affected by moderate alkalinity. Use with caution on aluminum or other soft metals and alloys. Removes cutting oils, petroleum oils, vegetable oils, paper labels. Removes most other lubricants, drawing compounds, buffing compounds, rust inhibitors, waxes, mold-release agents, marking inks, and many other industrial substances. Typical uses....

Performance Properties & Active Components
Dissolves instantly in hot or cold water; low viscosity assures consistently accurate solutions when fed thru a metering pump or suction device such as a venturi injector. At recommended use dilutions, it provides:
- Quick wetting, penetration, dispersion and suspension of solids and oily substances, but with limited
emulsification for increased skimming effectiveness.
- Near-zero foam at all temperatures.
- Simultaneous cleaning AND assured rust prevention--even for cast iron--and for over 30 days--
IF NOT RINSED IN PLAIN WATER.
- Quick, virtually spot-free rinsing, if desired, and scale-free equipment--both due to low surface
tension and deactivation of calcium and other hard water ions.
Contains buffered alkalies, organic chelants & sequestrants, organic & inorganic rust preventives, and a synergistic blend of anionic & nonionic wetting agents, penetrants and dispersants. Contains no nitrites, no chromates, no phosphates.
Recommended Use Dilutions
shown as % of solution volume & equivalent fluid ounces per gallon solution
Dilute in water to suit the job. For cleaning effectiveness, the dilution required depends on the quantity and type of dirt, porosity of the surface, temperature, soak time allowed, and degree of agitation applied by the cleaning method. For rust prevention, the dilution required depends on type of iron or steel, after-wash storage conditions, and required rust-free storage time.
For use in spray washer to remove dirt resulting from
machining and other manufacturing processes, at least | 1% = 1.28 oz/gal. |
For use in vibratory , spindle, or tumbling machines:
Rust protection not needed: at least | 1/2% = 0.64 oz/gal. |
Rust protection needed for parts or media: at least | 1% = 1.28 oz/gal. |
For any use requiring rust prevention for over 30 days:
Inside, at ambient temperatures & humidity, at least | 3% = 3.84 oz/gal. |
For any unusually severe conditions, up to | 10% = 12.80 oz/gal. |
Rust Prevention
A 3% solution on steel or cast iron dries in less than 3 hours at common conditions. When dry, the metal has no visual change; it feels smooth and waxy; it is non-sticky. Before painting, rinse metal with water, hot or cold.
The following severe test provides a method of confirming effectiveness before use:
Test metal: steel chips from a machining operation; coolant drained, chips dirty.
Prepare 100ml of 3% solution. Pour about 80ml of solution into 100ml beaker. Add chips, about 10gm
= about 1 teaspoonful. Stir 2 minutes for good wetting. Pour off all but about 1ml of solution. Spread
chips, wet, on filter paper. Store in intended storage area.
At suitable periods, observe for rust on chips or on filter paper.
Our results using this test and a similar test on cast iron were;
Stored inside at ambient temps varying from 30F to 90F, and at ambient relative humidity varying from
40% RH to 92% RH.
After 9 months: No rust. Tests discontinued.
Customers have reported comparable effectiveness under actual use conditions on many types of steel and on cast iron engine blocks. Our test experience indicates that if no rust occurs within 48 hours, none will occur in subsequent months.
Use Temperatures & Time Required
Hot solutions, 140F to boil point, provide the most effective cleaning. “Cold” solutions, at ambient temperatures, remove many common industrial substances such as oils, rust inhibitors and buffing compounds; when used cold, higher concentration and longer time needed.
For some substances, especially if they are solids or very thick at ambient temperatures, hot solutions are essential.
One to 15 minutes is normally required for parts. The time required for equipment varies greatly; some substances are removed instantly on contact, others need hours.
