CLEAN-N-ETCH
Concrete Cleaner & Etchant: Prepares Concrete for Seal Or Paint
Clean-N-Etch improves adhesion and thus increases the durability of concrete seals; it is especially important on smooth-troweled floors.
Mortar Remover – Grout Cleaner – Rust Stain Remover
Use on concrete, Portland cement, sandstone, brick, quarry tile, and many other kinds of masonry. DO NOT USE ON surfaces containing marble or granite; this includes terrazzo, oxychloride, travertine and magnesite floors; for these, see Cardite #623.
Preparation of Concrete for Seal
Quantity Required: One gallon Clean-N-Etch per 2000 square feet.
- Clear area as much as practical; sweep to remove debris. Depending on condition of the floor, use one of the following methods:
Raw Concrete |
concrete never previously sealed: |
fairly clean, no oil…… | Only Clean-N-Etch is needed; use as in #2 below |
dirty, some oil…… | Scrub with Atlas; use stiff-bristle brush, rinse. Use Clean-N-Etch as in #2 below. |
oil soaked…… | Scrub with Cardisolv #CKE and stiff-bristle brush, rinse. Use Clean-N-Etch as in #2 below. |
Sealed Concrete
Concrete previously sealed with a SOLVENT-VEHICLE seal, curing agent, or paint:
Same as raw concrete except scrub with coarse floor pad or grit-type brush; abrasive action improves adhesion.
Waxed Concrete
Concrete coated with any wax or emulsion finish or acrylic-emulsion seal:
Remove wax with Ammodet, Waxstrip #75, or Waxstrip #62; use Clean-N-Etch as in #2 below.
Fresh Concrete
Concrete just poured, less than 48 hours old:
No preparation needed for the seals and curing agents that can be used on fresh concrete.
- Apply Clean-N-Etch:
Add 1gallon Clean-N-Etch to 2 gallons water to make 3 gallons solution. Apply solution freely so that it covers about 2000 square feet. Let stand at least 5 minutes. Use mop, squeegee, or deck brush to assure that high spots are kept wet for 5 minutes. Scrub if Clean-N-Etch is also being used as a cleaner; use stiff-bristle brush on raw concrete; use abrasive scrubber on sealed concrete. Rinse well with clear water and let dry.
Mortar Removal:
To remove excess mortar from brick or quarry tile, use on quart Clean-N-Etch per gallon of water. Apply and scrub with suitable brush. Rinse with hose. For cleaning old exterior brick see Cardite #745. For removing general soil and smoke damage from old interior brick see Atlas.
Grout Cleaning
To clean and whiten grout between bricks and quarry tile, use one quart Clean-N-Etch per gallon of water. Mop on, scrub with brush, rinse. If old grout is black with oily dirt, clean first with Atlas or, if very bad, with Cardisolv #CKE rinse, then whiten with Clean-N-Etch. To prevent re-accumulation of dirt on grout and to simplify maintenance, seal floor with Prime.
Rust Stain Removal
To remove rust stains from concrete, apply Clean-N-Etch full strength directly on the rust stain. Let stand about 5 minutes. Scrubbing helps. Rinse. Repeat until gone. Complex stains caused by rusty coolant from car radiators are very difficult; try several applications. For hard surfaces other than concrete, see Cardite #623. For rust stains on rugs and textiles, see Erusticator.
